Potato harvesting has started in Continental

30 August 2023

Continental Farmers Group has started harvesting potatoes, for which it has allocated more than 2.1 thousand hectares in 2023. The work started in the Ternopil region. Early seed and food potato varieties are the first to be dug up.

Preliminary yield forecasts are positive: according to the results of sampling, the harvest of chips and seed potatoes has already reached the target. The main variety of potatoes is the late Melody, which is now actively increasing its yield, and expectations are also optimistic.

"Despite the fact that a prolonged cold spring resulted in a slightly later planting, sufficient rainfall in June and July contributed to the rapid growth and development of plants, the establishment of the required number of tubers and their growth. Therefore, we consider this season to be quite productive for potatoes. We are currently working in the morning and evening to offset the impact of the hot weather. The harvesting period is expected to last until the third week of October," says Kostiantyn Shytiuk, Chief Operating Officer of Continental.

Along with the harvest, the company is preparing storage facilities for the crop.  The capacity of potato storage facilities reaches 106.2 thousand tons. The company notes that there are enough warehouses to store the expected harvest. Some of them are ready to receive the first batches, while others are in the final stages of preparation.
