The Smart Garden child educational project launched by Continental has been started for the fourth time

27 April 2023

As part of the initiative, children are learning the basics of agronomy and farming technology as well as gaining experience in volunteering now for the second year in a row. The vegetables grown by the project participants are used to make dry borscht, and herbs are used to make tea for Ukrainian defenders.

This year's Smart Garden participants will grow traditional borscht vegetables: beets, cabbage, carrots, onions, and peppers. Medicinal herbs include mallow and marigold. For the first time, they will harvest peanuts, which they plan to add to energy bars and pumpkins to make candied fruit.

In previous seasons, the project involved children from rural areas, but this year, one of Ternopil's schools supported the Smart Garden, which will grow microgreens. With Continental's support, the school is setting up a special installation with automatic watering and lighting regulation.

In total, more than 150 children from Ternopil, Khmelnytsky and Lviv regions have applied for the project. "Continental provides the participants with seeds and growing materials, as well as agronomic support. In addition, the company finds places to process the harvest and helps deliver the finished products to Ukraine's defenders”.

This year, Smart Garden not only expanded its geography but also attracted partners: the project was supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and seed and fertilizer companies.
